AcrySof® Toric Lens
Astigmatism is a result of the cornea being irregularly shaped; curved more like a football than a baseball. This results in a blurring or doubling effect on your vision. Toric IOLs have a specific shape that is designed to correct the irregularities caused by the unbalanced shape of the cornea, while at the same time providing the distance vision correction a regular IOL would provide.
Patients with astigmatism had to either have additional surgery, such as LASIK, or would still be required to wear specialized glasses or contacts to correct astigmatism after the procedure.
Thanks to the technological development of the Toric intraocular lens (IOL), this is no longer the case.
With lens replacement surgery using a Toric IOL, the lens itself replaces the natural lens of the eye, and is permanently fixated. The unique shape of the lens results in the reduction and possible elimination of astigmatism, as well as clear distance vision. It should be noted that a person who elects a Toric IOL for their lens replacement would still need to wear reading glasses.
If you or a family member suffers from astigmatism, then a Toric IOL could be the solution. We would be happy to discuss in more detail your unique vision situation and all the options available that could have you seeing more clearly and freely, than ever before.
