Tecnis Monofocal Lens

In traditional cataract surgery, the clouded lens of the eye is replaced with a monofocal intraocular lens (IOL).  Monofocal literally means – ‘vision at one distance.’  This traditional lens provides immediate visual clarity, but does not account for any sort of refractive error or ‘high-order abberations,’ such as glare at night, that were present prior to cataract surgery.

At Southern Eye Center, we offer patients the option of an advanced version of this monofocal technology, called the Tecnis IOL.  The Tecnis IOL is designed using wave-front principles, which is a type of advanced technology that incorporates 3D imagery of the patients’ cornea into the design of the lens.  This allows the Tecnis IOL to correct many of these high-order abberations caused by the cornea, and ultimately provide the patient with better overall vision than traditional IOLs.

The Tecnis IOL is the only wave-front designed IOL on the market.  In clinical studies approved by the FDA, patients who underwent cataract surgery with the Tecnis IOL reported multiple advantages over traditional IOLs, including:

-Improved contrast sensitivity
-Improved color perception
-Improved functional vision
-Improved night driving performance

In one specific nighttime driving simulator test, the Tecnis IOL actually improved the distance a driver going 55 mph needed to identify a ‘pedestrian hazard,’ by 45 feet, compared to other traditional IOLs.

This basically says that a person who receives the Tecnis IOL can identify objects in the road, at night, a full second earlier than a person who receives a traditional IOL.  This study led to the FDA approved claim that the Tecnis IOL is “likely to provide a meaningful safety benefit to elderly drivers.”

The Tecnis IOL will provide patients with better vision, especially in low light conditions, than traditional IOLs.  However, this IOL is still a monofocal IOL, so it only corrects vision at one distance, meaning a patient will still need to wear glasses for activities such as reading.

Advantages of the Tecnis monofocal IOL:

-Lowest incidence of halos and glare out of any IOL
-Best IOL for nighttime driving
-Great IOL for functional vision under poor light conditions
-Enhanced color perception

Disadvantages of the Tecnis monofocal IOL:

-Only corrects vision at one distance – reading glasses will likely still be needed

-Does not correct other refractive errors such as astigmatism – additional procedure may be needed to correct such errors.

-Traditional IOLs are covered by insurance.  There is an additional cost associated with this ‘premium’ IOL.

Southern Eye Center offers multiple premium IOL packages designed to reduce your dependence on glasses after cataract surgery. If you or someone you know is suffering from cataracts, please schedule an appointment with us today. We'll work with you to determine your unique visual needs, and discover the procedure option that is best for you and your lifestyle.
