Francis Soans, M.D. completed a clinical fellowship in glaucoma at the University of Michigan Kellogg Eye Center in Ann Arbor, MI. News and World Report ranked the University of Michigan 14th among the top eye centers in the country. His glaucoma fellowship was under the mentorship of Dr. Paul Lichter, past Editor-in-Chief of Ophthalmology, the journal of the American Academy of Ophthalmology.

 

During his ophthalmology residency at the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey, Camden, NJ and Wills Eye Hospital, Philadelphia, PA, Dr. Soans distinguished himself as Chief Resident at UMDNJ/Cooper Hospital, and had the privilege of working with Dr. George Spaeth, the world-renowned glaucoma specialist. Currently, U.S. News and World Report ranks Wills Eye Hospital 3rd among the nation's top medical centers for eye care.

 

Glaucoma, which is damage to the optic nerve most commonly caused by high pressure within the eye, is a leading cause of blindness worldwide and the most frequent cause of irreversible blindness in African-Americans. People aged 60 and above are at higher risk of developing glaucoma. Dr. Soans specializes in the diagnosis and treatment of this condition.

 

Dr. Soans is a member of the American Academy of Ophthalmology, the American Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgery, and the Association for Research in Vision and Ophthalmology.
