Hattiesburg Retinal Procedure(Post-Operative Care)
Always maintain a clean and sanitary environment and wash your hands thoroughly before caring for your eye.
Sterile Saline (Eye Stream) and gauze pads: Use a gauze pad moistened with sterile saline, to gently clean around the eyelid after the patch has been removed and once a day as needed.
Eyedrops: Your kit will include 2 bottles of drops. These drops are to be used 4 times each day while awake. Wait at least 5 minutes between drops. It does not matter which drop you use first. Continue using these drops as instructed by your Doctor until he tells you otherwise.
Covering Your Eye: You will find a pair of dark glasses in your kit. You should wear these glasses to protect your eyes from injury and light sensitivity. These may be worn over your regular glasses or alone.
Face Down Position: If gas has been placed in your eye, you should maintain a face-down position at least every 15 minutes of each hour. This positioning helps the gas bubble in your eye seal torn areas, as well as, removes "wrinkles" from your retina. Follow your Doctor's instructions regarding sleeping position and avoid sleeping on your back.
What to expect when gas has been placed in your eye: During the first week after retinal surgery, the vision is usually very blurry. After about 7-10 days, you will see a line starting from the top of your vision. This line will slowly get lower until the gas is gone. At this time, you will no longer need to maintain "face-down" position and the orange ID bracelet may be removed. It may take several weeks to six months before maximum vision is achieved. Pain not controlled with pain medication should be reported without delay.
