Lynn B. McMahan, M.D., completed his residency at the University of Alabama and completed a fellowship with Drs. David Meyer and Steven Charles in Memphis. He was among the first American ophthalmologists to use phaco-emulsification and intra-ocular implants and to perform the majority of his cataract surgeries on an outpatient basis. His work has been featured in 36 national publications. He has given nearly 60 scientific lectures on 5 continents and in almost every major city in the United States.

 

Dr. McMahan has been named in the Guide to America's Top Ophthalmologists and named in the Best Doctors In America. He is a fellow of the Society for Excellence in Eye Care, where he serves on the Board of Directors along with receiving an award for Extraordinary Service to Society in the Field of Ophthalmology as a patient advocate. Dr. McMahan has been featured on the nationally syndicated 700 Club and as a guest on "Today's Eyes," a broadcast from the national ABC studios in New York City. Dr. McMahan was invited to address the Joint Meeting of the American Academy of Ophthalmology and the Pan American Society of Ophthalmology. He was a member of the faculty at the ASCRS cataract course for residents and ophthalmologists for phaco-emulsification and intra-ocular implants. He was a faculty member and surgeon for the flying hospital Orbis. He has been among the twenty-one busiest cataract surgeons in the U.S.

 

Dr. McMahan established Southern Eye Center's Gift of Sight Program, in which free surgery is provided for needy patients. The program won USA Today's National Make a Difference Award and was featured in USA Weekend magazine. Dr. McMahan is also one of only four ophthalmologists honored as a Person of Vision by the Mississippi Foundation to Preserve Sight.

 

Dr. McMahan is actively involved in the community as well as charitable foundations. He was chosen for induction into the University of Southern Mississippi Alumni Hall of Fame and has served as Chairman for the Honors Giving Program at USM. He has served as President of the Hattiesburg Lion's Club and has received the International President's Citation from Lion's International. He is a Melvin Jones fellow of Lion's Club, a member of the William Booth Society of the Salvation Army (where he currently serves on the Board of Directors) and a member of the Clara Barton Society of the Red Cross. Dr. McMahan established the Samuel Johnson Memorial Lectureship for Ophthalmology at the University of Mississippi and the Austin Callahan Residence Lectureship at the University of Alabama. In 2005, he received the Boy Scouts Pine Burr Area Council Scoutreach Division Medal of Honor, which is the highest award a district can give a volunteer for outstanding service to the community and the local Boy Scout division.

Dr. McMahan is the only doctor of the 350 Hattiesburg physicians to receive a Key to the City from the Mayor. The center he established was the only medical clinic awarded the Governor's GIVE award for excellence in volunteerism by Governor Ronnie Musgrove.

 
Dr. McMahan has met Nelson Mandela, shook hands with President George Bush, had breakfast with President Bill Clinton and had dinner with President Zia of Pakistan, the British Ambassador to India and had dinner at the residence of the Ambassador to Pakistan.

 

As President of Southern Eye Center, Dr. McMahan's vision is to have the finest sub-specialty ophthalmology referral practice in the country.
