Laser Assisted Stromal In-Situ Keratomileusis, or LASIK,
is a technique for reshaping the surface of the cornea to correct nearsightedness,
farsightedness, and astigmatism. It combines the use of a corneal flap
(called Lamellar Keratoplasty, or LK) with the precision of the Excimer
Laser.
An Excimer Laser operates by passing an electric current through a tube
of Argon Flouride gas. This causes a reaction in the gas which produces
an ultraviolet light energy, which is passed through a system of mirrors,
directing all the rays to travel in one direction (called coherent light).
Then, the directed light is focused through several lenses, increasing
its strength. All the rays converge at a focal point, where the beam is
strongest. It is this focus of light energy which is used to reshape the
cornea. The laser's light beam loses strength rapidly just past its focal
point, so other eye tissues are not affected.

WaveBlend is a proven and affordable LASIK option for near-sighted patients that provides great vision. This option creates a flap with a microkeratome.
Custom LASIK
Wavefront LASIK provides a treatment that is entirely customized to your eye’s individual needs using Wavefront technology. Custom LASIK eye surgery uses Wavefront technology to track eye movements much faster than traditional methods. This Wavefront system produces a detailed map of the eyes, much like a fingerprint. The map is then sent to the laser system and acts as a guide during the surgical procedure, allowing the LASIK surgeon to customize your treatment providing excellent vision. This option creates a flap with a microkeratome.

Realistic Expectations:
The decision to have Lasik/Wavefront is an important one that only you
can make. The goal of any refractive procedure is to reduce your dependence
on corrective lenses. However, this result is not guaranteed. Lasik/Wavefront
is not a preventative procedure. You will continue to experience the normal
aging factors that affect vision such as cataracts.
Serious complications with Lasik/Wavefront candidates are extremely rare.
Lasik/Wavefront is a safe and effective procedure, but like any medical
procedure, it does have some risks. After a series of tests and a thorough
eye examination, you and your doctor will determine if Lasik/Wavefront
is an option for you. If you are good candidate, you will be given additional
information about the procedure that will allow you to make an informed
decision about whether to proceed. Be sure you have all your questions
answered to your satisfaction.
