The STAAR Visian ICL™ is an implantable lens designed
to provide excellent vision to those individuals who are not suitable
candidates for LASIK surgery. The ICL (Implantable Collamer Lens) fits
over the natural lens of the eye, behind the iris. If there are major
changes in a patient’s vision, the ICL can easily be removed and
replaced, or another procedure can be performed at any time. With the
ICL, patients can still wear glasses or contact lenses if necessary. The
ICL does not help presbyopia (the need for reading glasses due to age.)
To be a candidate for the Visian ICL™, the patient needs to be between
the ages of 21 and 45, with moderate to severe nearsightedness.
C. Byron Smith, M.D. is the first physician in the Pine
Belt to offer the Implantable Collamer Lens to patients. This latest form
of vision correction is approved by the FDA.
